Taking a walk outdoors, enjoying nature, spending time with family — perhaps 2020 reminded us about the simple things in life. It seems like travel in 2021 and beyond will be about shifting our priorities and paring back to the essentials.
This is borne out by research undertaken by travel website Booking.com, which shows that, since the beginning of the pandemic, travelers are now looking for “simple pleasures” such as hiking (94%), nature (44%) and relaxation (33%). Research also shows that 69% will look for trips that will allow them to spend time outdoors or with their families during holidays; furthermore, 56% will look for travel to rural destinations and off-the-beaten-track experiences.
Relaxation is also high on the priority list for travelers in 2021: more than half (51%) of travelers say this is their preferred type of holiday followed by beach (40%) and city trips (29%).
What else is in the cards? Other findings show that domestic travel will be big — 47% say that they plan trips within the country over the next year (and 38% plan to do so in the longer term). Furthermore, old favorites and familiar destinations hold appeal: half of those surveyed say that they intend to go back to places they’d visited before.
