Ask The Expert!
Q: What are the pros and cons of commercial and natural soaps?
Natural, handmade soaps are made in small batches and don’t feature preservatives or artificial coloring and fragrances — their ingredients are less harsh and irritating to the body. However, often with no proper testing, there’s no guarantee that they’re hypoallergenic. People can also have adverse reactions to natural ingredients — proper labeling, which is often missing, should be included.
In terms of commercial soaps, you can expect to find chemicals and artificial ingredients — such as parabens, coloring and synthetic perfumes — included, and yet, some of these soaps have proven to help control and prevent skin problems. As mass-produced items, assessed by the FDA, labeling is clear and users can do their own research.
